The Law Offices of H. Brent Fortson, LLC, and The Law Office of Sam L. Stephenson merged as Fortson & Stephenson, LLC in 2008. In 2009, the firm added Attorney, Erick M. Barbare to Associate status. Erick is a former law clerk to the Honorable James W. Johnson, Jr., South Carolina State Court, Eighth Judicial Circuit (2004-2005).

Brent Fortson served as an Assistant Attorney General for South Carolina from 1973 through 1977. He then entered private practice as an Associate with Leatherwood, Walker, Todd and Mann becoming a partner with the Firm in 1980 through 1987; Thereafter, Brent was instrumental in creating two successor firms, before establishing his private practice as the Law Offices of H. Brent Fortson, LLC in 2000, specializing in Civil Litigation.

After serving in the United States Army, Sam L. Stephenson began the practice of law as an associate with Haynsworth, Perry, Bryant, Marion & Johnstone in Greenville, South Carolina in 1976. Sam became a partner with the Haynsworth firm in 1982. Sam left the Haynsworth firm in 1990 to form the firm of Taylor, Stephenson & Henry with Albert Q. Taylor, Jr. and Stephen John Henry. In 1995 Sam formed the firm of Foster & Stephenson with Richard J. Foster, and continued this practice until joining forces with Brent.
